Read a dentist's perspective on dental laboratory web sites.

OK, I'm here. I've typed in your URL and I'm at your Home page. Your ad, your mailer and that short face-to-face we had at the last dental meeting has convinced me that I need to know more about what your lab can do for me and my practice.

I want to know how you can make my life easier. I want to know how your work will make my patients and me happy. I want to know how your lab can help me cut down the number of remakes I have to do.

I want to get the information I need from your site quickly and easily and go about my business. I don't need esoteric rotating menus and no, the menu items don't need to bonk, whistle or beep but they do need to be large enough for me to read. You've got to make it easy for me to use your site!

Yes, it is all about me! And about my patients.

I couldn't care less about the fact that a smiling 20 something year old glides by on the computer screen accompanied by some soft music background while lettering extolling your laboratory's virtues appears and then fades on my computer screen. In fact after the first 5 seconds of watching the opening page, I'm getting annoyed. I've got a patient waiting. "Geez, where's that skip intro link? The heck with it, there are other labs - I've got to get back to my patient." CLICK!

Now that I'm here, it's up to your site to either convert me to a customer or, if I am already a customer, to provide me with enough information that is helpful to me to keep me here. Let's look at it this way, with direct mail you are ecstatic with a 2% return but with a web site if only 2% of those dentists who visited your site become your customers that means that something about your site turned off 98% of those dentists who made the effort to keep your mailing and who took time away from their practice to visit your site. I know that you can't please everyone but a 98% failure rate is unacceptable.

Unfortunately most dental laboratory sites are ineffective at best and, at worst, they can be destructive to the laboratory at doing what they are supposed to do - that is to bring new customers into the laboratory and to increase the support available to current customers.

So what do I want?

I want to know about the quality of your work.

Let me repeat that - I need to know about the quality of YOUR work. I need to see what YOUR work looks like on the bench and in a patient's mouth; and a real patient at that, not a model hired by the photographer who may or may not have had any dental work done. I don't need to look at any more professional advertising photographs of preparations and restorations done on a dentoform by the manufacturer of the materials used.

What services and products can you provide?

Naturally I need to know if your laboratory provides the services that I need in my practice. I need to know about the full extent of your laboratory's capabilities.

Is there anything new or improved that I should know about?

Are you providing any additional services since the last time I visited your site? Are there any new products or techniques that would help me serve my patients better, more esthetically or more efficiently? You are the ones who get this news early; share it with me.

There are so many new techniques and materials; it would be really helpful if I could count on your site to be a resource for me.

With the increasing ability of dental materials to provide lifelike, long lasting restorative solutions I need to be able to cut through all the advertising claims and have a resource that can explain the benefits and contraindications of various techniques and materials. I could also use a source of information on preparation requirements and impression techniques so that I can provide what you need to give me an ideal restoration.

I need to know which implant systems you support and would appreciate a central location where detailed descriptions of the various configurations and assembly requirements for the various implant systems and components were available.

Where's my case?

It would be great if I could access a page at your site and find out what stage my case was at in its progress through the laboratory. Are the castings complete, has the porcelain been applied, has the case been shipped?

Make it easy for me to get my case to your lab.

How do I schedule a pick up? Can I get some boxes? Can I download prescriptions from your site? Don't make me rummage through your site to find this information, put it where it's obvious and easy to get to.

What are your fees?

Always nice to know

These are my concerns, what I would look for if I were searching for a new laboratory. What do your dentists want? Ask them! Ask them how you can improve your site to be more supportive and make their life easier.

You'll be surprised at what you learn and how your business improves.
